Donating coffin to the dead is considered one of the greatest merits in Theravada Buddhism.
This family living in poverty could not afford to purchase a coffin for their deceased family member, and the deceased can only be placed in the Mortuary Body Refrigerator rented from the hospital.

帮助善心人士把捐款交給窮苦的家庭, 加上自己的一分餘力, 幫助他们已去世的家人買棺材, 辦喪事, 何樂而不為
Helping a kind devotee to pass his donation to a family living in poverty. I also added my share of contribution, to help them purchase a coffin and to hold a proper funeral for the decease family member. I was more than happy to do this.
Today I have helped a devotee to arrange for his donation to be passed directly to an underprivileged family in a rural area in Lampang, Thailand, to purchase a coffin for a 35 year old man who has died in a tragic car accident.
The money will go into the purchase of a proper coffin, conducting a decent funeral and setting up a grave for the deceased. We would like to thank the kind and generous devotee for his great compassion in helping the less fortunate.

The monk has also conducted a ritual for both the donor and the deceased. The ritual serves to inform the deceased of the kindness of the donor and to bless the donor for his kind deed. Your kind deed has given the deceased human dignity and also peace of mind for the family living in poverty. Our gratitude towards your kind deed is beyond words can express.

The donation will also go into finding a resting place for the deceased and for a proper funeral to be conducted to give the deceased a sense of dignity that will bring emotional comfort and solace for the family.

The idea of donating coffin is to provide the deceased with a decent final resting ground. From a Taoist point of view there will be less homeless, wandering and distressed spirits.
Many people in Thailand and other Asia countries are too poor to provide a proper burial for their dead loved ones and they will seek help from the temples. As times go by, the practice of coffin donation by devotees to help the poor becomes a norm and a way for Buddhists to gain merits, and gain good karma. To them coffin donation is for good luck and to reduce the impact of negative karma, and is one of the quickest and most effective ways to change one's destiny for the better.
The pursuit of merit is the Buddhist way to develop a wise sense of self. Merit then sets out in general terms the types of meritorious activities that conduce to the happiness, focusing primarily on three: giving, virtue and meditation .The happiness of generosity can be maximized by wisely choosing the proper motivation for giving.
In the course of developing a wise sense of self in the pursuit of merit, one already is learning how to let go of unwise ways of "selfing" as one learns how to overcome stinginess, apathy and hard-heartedness through the development of giving, virtue and goodwill.

It is well-known to people in Hong Kong that the entertainment mogul and philanthropist Shaw Run Run, who was one of the most influential figures in the Asian entertainment industry, has also donated many coffins throughout his entire life. He lived to an old age of 106, and his success in both commercial and humanitarian causes is something that need no more elaboration.
In Chinese character, coffin is actually written as 棺材, which shares the same pronunciation as 官財 in the idiom 升官發財, which means to be promoted and prospered. The act of donating a coffin 棺材, carries a very auspicious meaning and implication for 官財 (promotion and prosperity) to return to you.
